The Academy of Art University, formerly known as Academy of Art College, is a for-profit university owned by the Stephens Institute, located in San Francisco, which is the only consolidated city-county in the US state of California, the 4th populated city in the state, as well as the 12th most populated city in USA, having a population estimated at a number of more than 800 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census.
The Academy of Art University was established in 1929, as the Academy of Art Advertising, by Richard S. Stephens, who was a fine arts painter and the creative director for Sunset. In 1966, the institution was incorporated as the Academy of Art College, and it was granted the authority to confer the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree that same year, by the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education.
Today, the university offers its students, who are approximated at a total number of more than 16 000, both on-campus and distance education (online) degrees and certificate programs in its fine arts programs, including AA, BA, BFA, for undergraduate degrees, and MA, MFA and MArch for graduate degrees, overall, the academy offering degree and certificate programs in 16 majors, including: Animation & Visual Effects, Fashion, Graphic Design, Industrial Design and Web Design & New Media.
Athletics
The athletic teams from the Academy of Art University are known as the Urban Knights, who compete in NCAA Division II, in the Pacific West Conference, in 14 sports, for both men and women, including in basketball, baseball, golf, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. Their distinctive colors are black and red.
Notable Alumni
Among the most resonant names, on the list of notable alumni, there are: Chris Milk - music video director for artists U2, Green Day, Kanye West, Gnarls Barkley, John Mellencamp, Modest Mouse, and Chemical Brothers, among others, Alejandro Lalinde - cinematographer of music videos for such talents as Ne-Yo, LL Cool J, Lil Wayne, and Nas, and Deanne Fitzmaurice - a BFA graduate of the Academy and a staff photographer for the San Francisco Chronicle, won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize in feature photography for her photo essay of efforts by Children's Hospital Oakland to treat an Iraqi boy for life threatening injuries sustained in an explosion, among few others.
